Cracks, Drywall Repair and Why Paint Alone Won't Fix Them

October 8, 2026 Soares Painting

A crack in a wall or ceiling is one of the most common reasons people call a painter — and one of the most commonly misunderstood. Paint covers color. It does not fix a crack.

Most hairline cracks are cosmetic. They appear where drywall sheets meet, around doors and windows and at the corners of ceilings, usually because the house has settled or the seasons have expanded and contracted the framing. Pennsylvania's temperature swings make this common, especially in older homes.

The right fix is to open the crack slightly, fill it with joint compound or flexible filler, tape it if needed, sand it flat and prime it before painting. Skip those steps and the crack usually comes back through the new paint within weeks.

Some damage is more than cosmetic. Large, widening or stair-step cracks, bulging drywall or stains from water may point to a structural or moisture issue that needs fixing first. A good painter will tell you when it's time to call someone else rather than paint over a problem.

For ordinary cracks and drywall damage, though, a proper repair works. We patch holes, repair water-damaged sections, hang and finish new drywall and then paint, so one crew handles the whole job.

And because old houses keep moving, we stand behind our repairs: if a crack reappears within 3 months, we fix it.
